Moccagatta
The “Basarin”, from vines around Neive, has sweet black fruits and currants on the nose, but is firm and lean on the palate, providing excellent nearer-term drinking. Garnet red in color; intense and complex on the nose, with aromas of ripe red fruit and spice. The flavor is warm and vigorous; the mouth-feel rich and soft. The wine is well-balanced, intense and with a long finish. Serving suggestions: Cheeses, red meat, game.
Wine Enthusiast
Basarin unveils super seductive aromas of mocha fudge, clove, toasted almond, sweet cherry and cured meat. There’s enormous depth and density here and the finish is thick and chewy. The wine lasts long on the palate and would pair perfectly with any truffle-based dish.
Score: 93. —Monica Larner, December 30, 2009.Wine Spectator
Fresh and precise on the nose, with plum and dried porcini aromas. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. A bit reserved now, but I like the clean and focused character in this wine. Best after 2012.
Score: 90. —James Suckling, September 30, 2008.Wine Advocate
The 2005 Barbaresco Basarin reveals an attractive core of perfumed ripe red berries, sweet toasted oak and herbs framed by silky tannins. Medium in body, the wine possesses excellent length although the intensity tapers off a bit on the mid-palate. This is the most accessible of the Moccagatta Barbarescos. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
