Quinta do Encontro Bairrada 2014
|Brand||Quinta do Encontro|
Wine SpectatorThere's a firm snap to the dark currant, plum and blackberry flavors, showing some pastry notes. The lusciously spiced finish is powerful and rich, with hints of dark chocolate. Drink now through 2020. 8,333 cases made.
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 QdoE is an 80/20 blend of Baga and Merlot, partly (50%) aged for six months in second use French oak, with the rest in stainless steel. This is a rather respectable performance at this bargain-basement price in what most in Portugal view as a horrific vintage for the region. Showing more than reasonable concentration for the level and the year, this has some grip on the finish and a bit of lift to the fruit due to its fresh feel. It lacks the mid-palate concentration to age really well--at this price level, that tends to be the case even in better vintages--but right now it seems awfully serious and notably exceeds expectations. I'm constrained in scoring only by the fear that this has nowhere to go but down, but right now it is a super buy and probably the best bargain-hunter value of Global Wines' (which owns this property) offerings this issue. I won't be surprised if it holds decently for several years, but it is meant to drink young and it should be for best results. There were 100,000 bottles produced.
