A deep, dark, purple colour. An intense, fruity, spicy nose. A full entry on the palate leading to a very fruity, savoury mid-palate with a classy texture expressing good flavour and layers of fruit. A complex finish with coated, fleshy tannins. The oak from the ageing has been perfectly integrated.

Graphite, blueberries, very ripe cherries, chocolate and violets pour out of the glass of this concentrated and complex wine. You could easily mistake it for a top St.-Emilion Grand Cru Classé! The fine-grained tannins carry the long, graceful finish beautifully. Drink or hold.

The 2016 Château Godeau comes from more clay soils and a cooler terroir not far from Pavie Macquin. In 2016 it’s a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in one-third new French oak. Cassis, violets, underbrush, and hints of graphite all emerge from this richer, beautifully textured, serious Saint-Emilion that has terrific tannin quality, a silky texture, and a great finish. It should keep for 10-15 years.

The 2016 Godeau has a deep garnet-purple color and rolls out of the glass with vibrant black cherry compote, wild blueberries and kirsch scents with nuances of red roses, cedar chest, unsmoked cigars and cardamom. Full-bodied with mouth-coating red and black fruit flavors, it has a solid frame of ripe, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long.

Still compact, but the core features coiled-up brambly energy and a range of boysenberry, plum and anise flavors waiting to unwind. Light tobacco and juniper accents score the finish. Well done. Best from 2021 through 2030. 1,500 cases made.

The 2016 Godeau is plush, dark and inviting. Dark fruit, chocolate, menthol, licorice and savory herb notes flesh out in this ample, creamy Saint-Émilion. This is an especially resonant style. Much of that can be attributed to clay-rich soils that give the wine volume. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Julien Lavenu is the consulting winemaker.
