Equis Saint Joseph 2017
Fresh and open, with a beam of black cherry and blackberry compote flavors at the core, laced with dried anise, savory and olive hints. Flicker of cast iron keeps the finish grounded. Best from 2021 through 2031. 200 cases made, 50 cases imported.
Deep, brilliant violet. Mineral-accented cherry and dark berry liqueur aromas are complicated by hints of candied flowers and licorice. Supple and broad on the palate, offering concentrated blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that turn livelier as the wine stretches out. A suave floral pastille note comes up on the broad, clinging finish, which shows sharp clarity and rounded tannins.
Hints of almond paste and baking spices appear on the nose of the 2017 Saint Joseph, sourced from the same grower in Saint-Jean de Muzols since 2007. It's a bit fuller-bodied than usual, chunky and fleshy, filled with obvious red berries and finishing easy and open.
The 2017 Saint Joseph from Graillot and Schmittel has a forward, sexy perfume of sweet berry fruit, exotic pepper, and sappy herbs. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, with building tannins and juicy acidity, it's a classic effort that's going to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.
